Syllabus Seminar on Welfare Services for Disabled People

What is ‘disability’? How does disability affect individuals and their families? How do individuals and societies look at and define ‘disability’? How should social policy respond to ‘disability’ issues? This course aims to provide an opportunity for all participants, to think and discuss, read and reflect upon these issues. Some sees disability as personal defects; others views disability as environmental constraint. Some investigate into the psychological and social aspects of adaptation or recovery; others pay attention to certain types of disabilities and their special challenges; still others focus on how disability affects the family system and other members of the family. How about you? What disability issues do you concern about or take interest in? Through discussions and sharing, this course seeks to extend the experiences and perspectives of all participants.

Course Requirements:
All participants are responsible for creating an environment where everyone could read, think, share, and discuss. Therefore, the major requirement of this course is: PARTICIPATION. Two assignments are required: A. Summaries and Thoughts. Students are required to select 4 of the articles we read this semester, and write Summaries and Thoughts on them: 1.5 pages for each article. B. Topic Report: Think of one disability-related topic, look for some related literature, and please be critical: 5-7 pages. Deadline for both assignments: June 18th.
