Objectives |
The purpose of this introductory course is to provide students with a basic understanding of human language: what it is, how it works, and how it can be explored as a profession or as an outside interest. It introduces principles and methods professional linguists employ in exploring human language. It also covers how the research results can be applied to other areas such as L1 and L2 acquisition, natural language processing, language and gender, and language and cultural studies, etc. |

This introductory course provides an overview of Linguistics. It introduces principles and methods professional linguists employ in exploring human language. It is designed to be a first course in linguistics, meaning that no prior knowledge of it is assumed for its students. Topics to be covered in this semester course include: 1) language and its study, 2) phonetics, 3) phonology, 4) morphology, 5) syntax, 6) semantics and 7) pragmatics, 8)discourse analysis |
