Syllabus |
Designed for undergraduates, the course is a survey of the cinema which explores two major technological innovations, sound and color. The course explores one major cinematic technique: film lighting, a method employed by film makers to communicate meaning, entertain, and to produce a particular emotional or psychological response in an audience. Screenings and lectures are designed to analyze the aesthetic issues raised by the introduction of lighting technologies (such as exposure, shade, and shadow) and to examine the ways in which lighting functions in relationship to questions of plot and character, specifically in German Expressionist films, American film noir of the 1950’s, and their counterparts in some award-winning color films. |
