課程目標 由於對生命的日愈重視,因此生命科學的探討聚集了更多人的注意。本門課主要是經由生命起源及滅絕的過程來探討,進而了解生命的來源.尊重生命,並進一步了解目前國內對生物科技發展的情形和其在未來生活上的應用。 Objectives In Life Science, students are introduced to the scientific study of living things. They should develop their understanding of the way a single species functions in its environment as well as how communities of species live in their environment and interact with one another. Students should be able to recognize genes, to understand biotechnology, to develop their conscience and to have respect to all things in the world.

成績評量方式 期中考與期末考各占30%,而一份書面報告(題目與格式另訂)占40%,以作為期末成績評量(註:兩次考試之考題均出自教科書中每章末之思考與討論題) Grading Each of middle-term and final examinations contribute 30% of the final course grading; meanwhile, an special report (40%) on life science was also required. Note that the problems in the two examinations are all duplicated, without any change, from the discussion & questions at the end of each chapter of the textbook.

教學內容 日常生活,我們常說人類是高等生物;但從生物演化的觀點,細菌在較人類為長的演化史中,其代謝效率高而且應該比人經得起天擇的考驗,怎能說它們低等呢?以美國麻省理工學院與耶魯大學為例,其大一新生的除了化學、微積分與物理課程之外,生命科學已成為該校最基本的必修課程之一,這是著眼於在未來世紀的科技工程、抑或社會科學領域的大學畢業生一方面為增廣知識,二方面也可能將需面對較不熟悉而與『生物以及生命科學』等相關領域的應用與挑戰。 Syllabus Human beings are so far the so-called the highest organism in the world. From the point of view of evolution, bacteria indeed represent the best group of organisms under natural slection because of their performance in metabolism. As you may know, except Chemistry, Calcullus or Physics the freshmen of MIT and Yale University (USA) are also asked to take the course "Life science" as the requirement for graduation. This course change is based on the fact that the graduates from various disciplines (including science, engineering or other fields) may face the challenge derived from their less-familiar technology that is mainly based on the research & current development of Biology and the associated aspects.
