課程目標 社會工作是由知識、技能、倫理等三大元素所組成的助人專業,因此,社會工作學習者不應僅著重技巧的琢磨,忽略知識的累進與價值的不斷澄清,才不至於成為充滿「匠氣」而缺乏完整專業的「半專業」,甚至是「半弔子」的工作者。大體而言,Turner & Kendall(1986)依實務工作者的處遇需求與經驗,整理出實務工作者經常運用的二十一種實務工作取向,然而隨著社會議題的變遷與專業知識的不斷累積,近期又提出「反歧視與反壓迫處遇觀點(anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive perspectives)」或「增強權能與倡導(empowerment and advocacy)」觀點 (Payne,1997),以更基變的途徑來創造有利於弱勢團體生活的社會環境。 Objectives To sum up, this course is about social work practice theories, which try to explain, describe or justify what social workers do. Each theory explains how we have applied the basic principles of the theory in social work practice theory. Many such theories have connections with wider social and psychological theories. Each approach therefore contains some account of wider ideas in a section entitled wider theoretical perspectives. Therefore, the purposes of this course are to review social work practice theories, to offer an assessment and arrive at an understanding of them and their value in modern social work practice. It is review, not an attempt at constructing a new theory.

Syllabus What is the context of social work? What are social work practice theories? And what can theory do for us? For the clinician seeking to offer responsible, effective intervention, the most essential and important contribution of theory is its ability to predict outcomes, or, in other words, its ability to explain. Theory helps us to recognize patterns and relationships that aid in bringing order to the reality with which we are confronted to compare, evaluate and relate data. Simply put, theories and models of social work treatment are to explore practice theories which exist in social work activity with three aims:

☉to try to understand for myself, and contribute to others’ understanding of, the uses of these theories and the distinctions between.
☉to offer students a guide to different groups of theories, so that they may gain access to knowledge which might help them practice.
☉to contribute to understanding how theories may be used in social work practice and professional debate.
