課程目標 | 本課程目標在於使學生了解文學中的基本文類:詩、戲劇、小說、短篇故事、散文、及批評。學生需要留心每個文類的基本結構,且對於文學作品中的字彙與文法也必須了解。 | Objectives | The goal of the course, Introduction to Literature, is to familiarize students with basic genres such as poetry, drama (tragedy, comedy, history plays), novels, short stories, prose, and criticism. Students not only have to pay much attention to structures of each genre but also have to analyze the infrastructure of literary works, such as words, and grammars. |

成績評量方式 | All quizzes and exams are open book and students are allowed and endouraged to consult an English-language dictionary. However, students cannot consult notes or other outside sources or materials, including Chinese-English or English-Chinese dictionaries. Students may write notes in any language in their textbooks. Although be warned that over reliance on Chinese translations of English terms hinders rather than helps student comprehension. All quizzes and exams will consist of short treadings, definitions and occasionally sections of critical essays. | Grading | Quizzes and exams each comprise 50% of the grade 100-% perfect score 59% fail |

教學內容 | The course is divided into furs parts. Each part corresponds to a particular novel or collection of stories. Each two-hour, once weekly session will begin with a ten-question quiz or a short essay question devoted to the week's readings, except for the final week of eah part, which will be comprised entirely of a 25-question exam that covers the entire book. Following quizzes, class instruction and discussion will begin.
