Objectives |
This is a successive and comprehensive stage of writing after students have been trained to create cohesive and comprehensible units of essay paragraphs. This course is intended to help student readers to develop skills in the reading and evaluation of analytic and descriptive texts, and other texts with different styles. Students will be exposed to experience diverse pre and post-reading exercises to highlight aspects of good writing, such as structure, rhetorical patterns and other features. Based on this skill, when students explore the rules and methods of essay-writing, they should be able to improve the effectiveness in presenting knowledge and viewpoints. This goal can be reached through the integration of language skills: reading, speaking, and writing and classroom activities such as discussion presentation, etc. |

Objective
The purpose of this class is to teach students to create short essays based on the canonical five paragraph essay format in American high schools. Students should be able to:
--identify parts of a paragraph.
-- produce specific types of paragraphs (narrative, chronological, process, cause-and-effect, etc)
--organize paragraphs into essays on specific topics

CLASS CYCLE
Each week will consist of a writing task geared around learning paragraph writing, paragraph functions, and assembling paragraphs into longer essays.

Grades
Grades will be based on scores for attendance, homework and the final. Scores will be summed and a percentage taken. This will be adjusted by up to ten points for attendance. If you miss more than six classes, or fail to perform more than six homework or in-class assignments, you will fail. Because much analysis and training will take place in class, attendance is crucial. Students who miss class will fail. |
