Course Objective: This course will be grounded in a discussion of theory and practice on film comedy and related issues (e.g. stereotyping). Units will explore connections between humor and violence; consider how ethnic stereotyping operates in shifting contexts; evaluate gender and sexual roles with an eye to divergent - and changing - traditions; ask whether and how age may intersect with what we find funny; relish how satire and the debunking of social norms, institutions, and mores functions.
Course Description: Taking a cultural-defined reading, we will survey diverse film comedy traditions, whenever appropriate acknowledging the impact of cultural and ideological specificity, disciplines, and time periods. Emphasis will be on generic criticism of slapstick comedy, screwball comedy, black comedy, situation comedy, stand-up comedy, and comedian comedy. |
