課程目標 本課程將使學生對語言與文化間之關係有更深層的認知。學生將習得語言如何在思想行動上影響文化及次文化。課程將著重於語言、少數民族文化、階級文化、性別文化及本國文化。 Objectives This courses promises to acquaint students with the close link between language and culture. Students will learn how language shapes their own cultural and sub-cultural patterns of thought and action. Attention will be given to language and ethnic culture, class culture, gender culture and national culture.

成績評量方式 同學必須確實出席並且跟上閱讀進度。在每個單元的最後會給予報告的主題,問題會引導個人將自己的經驗與書本的內容結合。報告的頁數在3到4頁之間,行距為兩倍行高。 Grading Students are expected to attend classes
regularly and keep up with the readings. At
the end of each part a take-home paper topic
will be distributed. The questions will prompt
students to apply their own experience to the
readings. The papers should be three to four
double-spaced pages.

教學內容 此課程帶領你探索語言與日常生活經驗的關係。課程一開始會介紹早在19世紀到20世紀初的殖民環境, 現代中文之於當代經驗之間的關係即存在。這論點表示一個民族的文化的自然語言被視為是特殊的語言或者大家可以藉由政治或複雜的文化環境來追朔其歷史的。接著課程會探討語言如何在特定的文化中描述階級地位,尤其在這個部分,課程會帶領同學去思考,當大多數的人所使用的語言並非附有力量時,事實是否還是可以透過語言的描述來戰勝權力? 第三部份,課程會探討科技的聲音、電影和印刷品如何產生集合的文化經驗之批評的元素。第四部分,課程會藉由人類學的轉變來思考人們在遇到強大興趣和科技的層面下會如何表現。 Syllabus This course explores some of the complex relations between language and everyday experience. The course begins by demonstrating that the relationship of modern Mandarin Chinese to contemporary experience is one that is rooted in colonial encounters of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The point is to show that the very languages that are held dear as “natural” languages of a national culture or people can be traced to their historical emergence in complex cultural/political circumstances. The course will then consider how languages operate within a specific “culture” to delineate class subject positions. In this part in particular the course will consider the question of whether, in fact, truth can be spoken to power when power speaks a language different from that of the majority. In part three the course will consider how technologies of voice, film and print produce critical elements of collective “cultural” experience. In part four, the course will take a humanist turn and consider how people might act with moral agency in the face of powerful interests and technologies.
