This course will expose students to current research in bilingual education. Students will learn of the linguistic, cultural, and political issues surrounding bilingual education in Taiwan and elsewhere. |

Syllabus |
Marshall McLuhan wrote: “Education is ideally civil defense against media fall out.” This course takes seriously this aim by promising to teach students how to analyze the ways that media affect the choices, hopes, dreams and self-conceptions of people in Taiwan in the world. Particular attention will be paid to the ways that media representations of bilingual education affect people in Taiwan. By way of hands-on ethnographic research and guided readings in media theory, this course will, thus, advance the capacity of students to understand and perhaps resist the influence of media of their lives. |
